Penobscot Community Health Center (PCHC) is the only Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) serving approximately 115,000 people living in the Bangor region. About 75% of our patients are lower income, have little or no health insurance, or are MaineCare or Medicare participants. PCHC is here to make sure that EVERYONE in the Greater Bangor Area has access to quality primary health care services they need…regardless of ability to pay.
What services do we now provide? Our 15 practitioners and our visiting specialists provide family medical, pediatric, dental and specialist care, as well as counseling services. PCHC is already the largest of the 40 or so community health center facilities in Maine! This year we will provide over 40,000 patient care visits to over 15,000 people.
PCHC also provides the Shaw House Clinic for homeless adolescents and young adults; Penobscot Job Corps Clinic for disadvantaged youth; and the Miles for Smiles mobile dental clinic which provides oral health care services for low income children in rural Maine (with generous support from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield).
Today, however, PCHC sadly has to turn away thousands of people seeking medical and dental care - due to lack of space, equipment and practitioners. In our dental clinic alone we have a waiting list of about 3,000 people - mostly from lower income families.
OUR SOLUTION: we are DOUBLING our space, so we can support more dedicated practitioners and care for more of our neighbors in the Greater Bangor Region. We just leased 12,000 more square feet in a building right beside our medical clinic. The interior is now being built to house a much larger dental clinic and for a pharmacy service for our patients.
This new space means we will be able to hire more practitioners to serve thousands more of our neighbors a year, who have few other options to see a doctor or dentist:
A new Internal Medicine physician and another nurse practitioner.
In-House Pharmacy for our patients. Fees for prescriptions for our lower income patients will be reduced relative to their ability to pay.
Three-Four more Dentists, and additional Dental Hygienists.
Additional needed part-time Medical Specialists.
Another Mental Health Counselor; additional Psychiatric Services.
Patient Educators - to help patients manage their chronic diseases.
Case Managers - to help patients obtain financial supports for health services and facilitate referrals.
An Electronic Medical Record System to help our practitioners be most efficient.
To do all this, we need to raise $1,000,000 right now which will pay for:
Build-out of the new dental and pharmacy facilities - about $400,000
Medical and pediatric equipment and renovations of facilities - about $150,000
Dental equipment - about $350,000
Pharmacy equipment and start-up costs - $100,000.
Your help is needed Now. Cash donations or pledges paid over one to three years are welcomed. Gifts will be honored by public thanks and through plaques in our facilities. Special room and equipment naming opportunities are available. (For more information about Special Gifts, please contact Ken Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer, at 945-5247 x 401.)
With your help, within three years,
PCHC will provide almost 100,000 patient visits a year
for about 30,000 of our friends and neighbors -
mostly people with lower incomes and seniors.
Please Help!
Thank-you.
